Why You & Your Family Still Inhaling Toxic Chemicals Substance?

Protect Your Family from the Hidden Hazards in Air Fresheners

Air fresheners have become a staple in many American homes and offices, marketed with the promise of creating a clean, healthy, and sweet-smelling indoor atmosphere. But many of these products contain phthalates (pronounced thal-ates)—hazardous chemicals known to cause hormonal abnormalities, birth defects, and reproductive problems.

NRDC’s independent testing of 14 common air fresheners, none of which listed phthalates as an ingredient, uncovered these chemicals in 86 percent (12 of 14) of the products tested, including those advertised as “allnatural” or “unscented.”

To protect consumers, government action to conduct more thorough tests and enact basic measures to limit exposure to phthalates is urgently needed. Until consumers are given the information they need to make informed decisions about whether to use these products, it is best to avoid using air resheners—especially in places where there are children or pregnant women.

Phthalates: Health Hazards in Many Forms

Phthalates are used in many common consumer products—to soften plastics in children’s toys,
as sealants and adhesives in nail polish, and in perfumes and air fresheners. When people use air fresheners, the phthalates are released into the air where they may be inhaled or may land on the skin and be absorbed.

Once these chemicals enter the bloodstream, they can alter hormone levels and cause other health problems.

Phthalates are known to interfere with production of the male hormone, testosterone, and have been associated with reproductive abnormalities. Numerous animal studies have linked prenatal exposure to certain phthalates with decreases in testosterone, malformations of the genitalia, and reduced sperm production.

The State of California notes that five types of phthalates—including one that we found in air
freshener products—are “known to cause birth defects or reproductive harm.” Phthalate exposure in indoor environments has also been associated with allergic symptoms and asthma.

Improving Your Home’s Air Quality and Safety

Air fresheners are not a solution for poor air quality and cannot substitute for good ventilation. The best solution is to open windows to bring in fresh air or to use fans to maintain air circulation.

If you decide to use an air freshener, however, careful selection may reduce phthalate exposures to you and your family. The table shows which brands we tested contained phthalates.

Stronger Regulations Are Needed to Protect Consumers

There is a clear need for closer monitoring of the types of chemicals manufacturers are allowed to put into air fresheners—and for consumers to be provided with better information about what is in the products they do purchase.

NRDC recommends the following immediate steps:

- Consumers should avoid using air fresheners, but when necessary should use products with the lowest levels of phthalates to limit exposures to these potentially dangerous chemicals.

- The Environmental Protection Agency should require manufacturers to test and submit data on phthalates found in air fresheners, the extent of human exposure to phthalates in air fresheners, the health effects of the exposure, and the toxicity, persistence, sensitization, and other health effects of inhaling chemicals in air fresheners.

- The Consumer Product Safety Commission should ban phthalates in consumer products and should require that manufacturers provide ingredient information on the label.

According to studies done by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the majority of the U.S. population is routinely exposed to at least five different phthalates. Although the measured levels in the human blood stream are small, they are significant because a mixture of phthalates at low doses can act in an additive manner to cause the same health hazards as just one phthalate at a higher dose.

The difficulty of avoiding general exposure is all the more reason to eliminate further exposure in an environment over which you have much more control—your home.

Sinuses are air-filled spaces located within the skull bones. These sinuses are situated behind the forehead, cheek, around the eyes and nasal bones. Sinusitis occurs when there is inflammation of the sinuses due to viral, bacterial or fungal infection.

These sinuses (frontal, maxillary, ethmoid and sphenoid) are usually lined with mucosal membranes and drain into the nasal cavities. The mucous clearance from the sinuses occurs by the sweeping mechanism of small hair like structures called cilia.

This ciliary mechanism can be affected by certain medical conditions such as cystic fibrosis and Kartagener’s syndrome. Upper respiratory tract infection, allergies and deviated nasal septum can also cause blockage of the sinuses. Chronic smoking can also affect the ciliary function
and lead to sinusitis.

Symptoms of sinusitis

Sinusitis usually follows a cold that does not improve after 5-7 days. The symptoms include
-Nasal block
-Post nasal drip
-Nasal drip (rhinorrhoea)
-Headache
-Cough
-Bad breath or loss of smell
-Fever
-Fatigue

How is sinusitis diagnosed?

The doctor would obtain a complete medical history and ask for the above symptoms.
Nasal endoscopic examination can be performed which enables close inspection of the nasal cavities and the sinus openings.

Features of sinusitis would include inflamed turbinates and nasal mucosa with yellowish discharge (mucopus). Presence of nasal polyps would also be inspected.

Computed tomography (CT scan) of the sinuses can further confirm the diagnosis and will show the extent of the sinuses involved. It can also show the anatomy of the sinuses and determine if surgery is necessary. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may also be performed if there is suspicion of tumor or fungal infection.

Treatment

Treatment of sinusitis would be directed at decongesting the nose and treating the infection.
Broad-spectrum antibiotic is prescribed for 10-14 days.

Oral decongestants are also given to help open up the blocked sinus openings. Nasal decongestant sprays are also beneficial. However caution is taken that it is not used for more than 3-5 days as it cause worsening of the nasal congestion.

Other medications would include analgesics (painkillers), nasal saline sprays and mucolytics. Nasal corticosteroid sprays have also been shown to be beneficial in acute sinusitis, more so in patients with allergies and nasal polyps.

If fungal infection is suspected, treatment is more intensive and often surgery is advised. Invasive fungal infection is life threatening and would require inpatient treatment and immediate sinus surgery.

Is sinusitis a serious condition?

Sinusitis especially when acute can lead to life-threatening complications. Because of the close proximity of the sinuses to important structures, infections can easily spread with devastating effects.

The complications include eye infections, eye abscess, blindness, meningitis, brain abscess and encephalitis.

Symptoms of possible complication are swelling or redness around the eyes, headache not relieved with over-the-counter medicine, nausea, vomiting or changes in vision. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.

Does sinusitis require surgical treatment?

Most cases of acute sinusitis would resolve with adequate medications. However patients with nasal polyps, anatomical blockage of sinuses and allergies are prone to get recurrent or chronic sinusitis. This category of patients would often require sinus surgery.

How is sinus surgery performed?

Sinus surgery is performed with the use of nasal endoscopes (Endoscopic sinus surgery). This enables the ENT Surgeon to perform the surgery via the nostrils without any external skin incisions. The surgery is aimed to open the blocked or narrowed sinus openings, correction of deviated nasal septum, removing nasal polyps and drainage of the sinuses.

Nowadays, balloon sinuplasty is also being performed to widen the narrowed or blocked sinus openings. The ENT Surgeon would be able to advise if this type of sinus surgery is suitable for the patient.

How Fresh The Air Freshener?

How FRESH Your Air Freshener?
Are They GOOD For Health??

Air freshener chemicals have been implicated in cancer, neurological damage, reproductive and developmental disorders, and other conditions. The synthetic chemicals in air fresheners also can aggravate asthma and/or trigger attacks. Researching air freshener/plug-in ingredients from their Material Safety Data Sheets we find that these ingredients are toxic.

Many air fresheners employ carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and known toxins such as phthalate esters in their formulas. A Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) study of 13 common household air fresheners found that most of the surveyed products contain chemicals that can aggravate asthma and affect reproductive development. The NRDC called for more rigorous supervision of the manufacturers and their products, which are widely assumed to be safe

Car deodorizers have allergens that can cause some people to experience symptoms like headaches or eye irritation. These conventional fresheners also contain toxic chemicals like petroleum distillates, which can irritate or damage your lungs; phthalates, which can interfere with hormone production; and benzene compounds, which have been found to be carcinogenic, according to the Children's Environmental Health Network, a nonprofit Washington, D.C.-based consumer safety organization.

The Material Safety Data Sheet for the air freshener indicated that there was a potential for toxic effects in humans. The air freshener used in the study did not diminish the effect of other pollutants tested in combination. The results demonstrated that the air freshener may have actually exacerbated indoor air pollution via addition of toxic chemicals to the atmosphere.

With strong links to phthalates and formaldehyde, it's not surprising that a study that was recently published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine indicates that regular use of sprays can increase your risk of developing asthma by 30 to 50 percent. This study was performed by the European Community Respiratory Health Survey, and collected data from 3,500 people in 10 European countries.

Neither the FDA nor the EPA conducts any safety testing or spot checking of toxic chemicals in air freshener products. Essentially, consumers could be exposed to any number of toxic airborne chemicals from air freshener products, with no warning whatsoever. The safety of chemicals used in these products is utterly ignored by the FDA in much the same way that perfumes and cosmetic products containing cancer-causing chemicals are routinely ignored by the agency.

Our gym installed plug-in air fresheners designed to spray a mist of "air freshening" chemicals periodically.  One of them was attached near the ceiling, on a wall that was directly behind all of the treadmills, to ensure that those under the most physical stress, and those breathing the heaviest, would find themselves inhaling a massive blast of chemicals.  Did we mention that these things impair lung function to cause extreme shortness of breath, and potentially heart attacks?  These things are exactly what need to be placed above treadmills.

We experienced immediate difficulty in breathing when running the treadmills, despite all of us being in excellent condition.  We later experienced chest pains and other symptoms of heart problems in unison.  We decided that this madness could not continue any longer.  This article is comprised of our research efforts in pinning down the problem.

Who doesn't love that factory fresh "new car smell"? It's so well-liked that air fresheners and sprays have been produced in attempts to reclaim the odor.

But according to a new study from the nonprofit Ecology Center and HealthyStuff.org, what you might actually be sniffing are toxic fumes from chemicals used to create the car interior.

"Research shows that vehicle interiors contain a unique cocktail of hundreds of toxic chemicals that off-gas in small, confined spaces," Jeff Gearhart, research director at the Ecology Center, said in a written statement. "Since these chemicals are not regulated, consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face. Our testing is intended to expose those dangers and encourage manufacturers to use safer alternatives."
