Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Trailer








Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is an upcoming 2011 3D fantasy action-adventure film. It is the fourth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, distributed by Walt Disney Pictures, produced byJerry Bruckheimer and stars Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush, Kevin McNally, Stephen Graham, Gemma Ward and Richard Griffiths.

The film was first announced in September 2008, and principal photography started in June 2010. Unlike the previous films, which were shot primarily on location in the Caribbean, On Stranger Tides had most of its production in Hawaii.

The plot draws inspiration from the novel On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers, which is the same novel that inspired the LucasArts game The Secret of Monkey Island. The plot features Captain Jack Sparrow, again played by Johnny Depp, searching for the Fountain of Youth and confronting the pirate Blackbeard.

It is also first in the series to be directed by Rob Marshall and not Gore Verbinski. The film is set to be released on May 20, 2011 in Disney Digital 3-D and IMAX 3D, as well as in traditional two-dimensional and IMAX formats.

It will be the first Pirates of the Caribbean film to be released in 3D and Jerry Bruckheimer's second 3D film, following the 2009 film G-Force.

Birds V-Fly !!! Mystery or Miracle?




Have you ever noticed the sky when flock birds migrate from one place to another?

Yes,of course? Had you ever think the reason for that.

There is a strong reason and mystery behind it.


Before getting that revealed let me define two technical words.


















Upwash: The term upwash is used to refer to regions around an aircraft or airfoil where the air is moving in the opposite direction to downwash.The wingtip vortices induce an upwash outside the wingspan of an aircraft or airfoil balancing downwash produced by upper wing surfaces. Birds which migrate make use of this upwash and they form the V shape and make a easy fly.


Downwash: The meaning used most often by non-engineers, refers to the forcing of air downward during the creation of lift. This usage is most common with regard to helicopters where the effect is most dramatic.Now in terms of aerodynamics: The downwash immediately behind a wing is a consequence of the wing vortex system. This downwash is experienced by a horizontal tail placed in the flow behind a wing.





What Researchers Say?

The researchers found that there are 2 strong reasons behind this flying habit of birds. They are

1.The shape of the formation reduces the drag force that each bird experiences compared to if it were flying alone. the decrease in drag occurs thanks to the formation of wingtip vortices.2.The second strong reason holds for the V-Formation flying is that this orientation allows the birds to communicate more easily.




This V-formation provides the birds with good visual contact of each other to keep the flock together. This eye before communication minimizes the possibility of losing birds along the way as the formation crosses vast distances during migration.These kind of groups of birds will fly in a large V-shape with one bird in the lead and other birds trailing behind in two lines.A bird which is flying in one of these upwash regions gains free lift so that it can fly at a lower angle of attack.



Since the angle of attack is reduced, the induced drag is lowered so that the bird does not need to flap its wings so hard or as often to generate the thrust needed for forward flight. This obviously proves that bird’s muscle do not work harder. So its heart rate drops.


Yes, absolutely the bird does get not tired and can fly longer. 


Analysis proves: A flock of 25 birds in V-Formation can fly as much as 71% further than a single bird using the same amount of energy.


Do all Birds share drag force equally?

Because of spacing themselves apart in a proper distance, these birds can achieve optimum positions that reduce the drag of every bird in the V-Formation. But, not all birds benefit equally.



The first bird has to work the hardest since it flies into undisturbed air. The upwash this bird creates improves the aerodynamics of the two behind it, and these two further improve conditions for the next two birds in line.Although this kind of fly benefit all the birds, the bird which is in the lead position has to work harder. 




The time when the bird in lead position this bird tires, it will move out of the lead position and fall back into one of the lines of the “V”. To substitute this another bird from further back will rapidly move forward to take the leading position and maintain the V-Formation.The two birds in the trailing positions of V also tire more rapidly than those in the middle. 



The birds in trailing positions are also rotated frequently to share the tiredness throughout the flock.This kind of self management gives all birds in leading the flock and also they can relax by being in the middle of the flock.

Who taught them?

This V-Fly sense of teamwork comes by nature since the young birds in the flock realizes the ease of flying in the middle or V-Formation than flying alone.







Sucker Punch Trailer



Sucker Punch is an upcoming American action-fantasy film written by Steve Shibuya and Zack Snyder, and directed by Snyder. Nobuhiro "MONSTER" Tajima - Race Cars



Twin Engine CULTUS [1993]
This is the machine which convinced us to participate in the Hill Climb race. This machine achieved the win in unlimited division and fought well for the overall championship in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

Both high power, which can carry out full acceleration on a steep slope and intense down force which transmits high power reaching 800ps on a road surface, are well combined in this car. The use of wind tunnel and the suspension system were the key technology for the development of aerodynamics of this machine.












Twin Engine ESCUDO [1995]
It is the Japanese car that finished the championship with a Japanese driver in Pikes Peak Hill Climb when the course was shortened by 2/3 due to snowfall. It carries two sets of engines which provide 450ps on the front and rear of the chassis.

The weight of the car is 900kg and its power is 900ps. By this excellent power/weight ratio, the acceleration performance could reach the one of F-1 cars. This machine is unique because it was the only one successfully designed with a twin engine in the world car history.













V6 ESCUDO [1998]
This machine won the 1st prize in the Queenstown Gold Rush and 2nd prize in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. All parts: innovative aluminum tube space frame, 1000ps engine mounted on the mid ship layout, suspension system, brake system, tires etc. are upgraded.

Aerodynamics, one of the key technologies for victory, is also improved through a large number of wind tunnel tests. It has helped to higher down force and to lower the drag. The potential of the machine increased by leaps and bounds.













XL7 [2007]
This car is a new version of the 2005 machine, which was the "new generation" Hill Climb racing car designed with a concept similar to that of a formula car.

We highly considered aerodynamic influence on the car activity and completed a very effective wing. The wing is combined with its long-wheel-base chassis and enables an "on-the-rail" feeling of driving.

Compared to the 2005 one, this 2007 version has a more powerful engine, a more easily controllable steering system and a more dynamic appearance with its wider fender arch covering bigger diameter tires and wheels.

From his superb wild driving style, his nickname "Monster" was born.
In All Japan Dirt Trial(rally sprint) Championship, he has achieved 9 series wins. 1988, he has started competing on overseas event which is Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. In 1995, he has achieved overall win for the first time by the Japanese competitor. Also on New Zealand's "Race to the Sky", winning 8 times which now the mountain is called "Tajima's mountain". He has also entered overseas rallies, and especially on Asia Pacific Rally Championship, he has won 5 times in the 2WD division.

The history started on 1983, when he established Monster International Co., Ltd. to help out motor sport competitors. There, he has worked together with many motor sport enthusiasts. This contribution has been caught by the eyes of Suzuki Motor Corporation. In 1986, Suzuki Sport Co., Ltd. was established in order to become in charge of the automobile motor sport of Suzuki Motor Corporation. Suzuki Sport Co., Ltd. does the total research and development, manufacturing, and assemblying the competition vehicles.

From 2002, Junior World Rally Championship project has started and has become team principal achieving driver's champion on 2004. And now 2006, he has begun a new challenge, which is to enter the World Rally Championship together with Suzuki. He is busy being as team principal of the WRC project now.

But on 2007, he has come back to Pikes Peak again as a driver, and achived overall win. This year, he will am for record breaking time!


RACE CAR

The race car for 2010 is the " Monster Sport SX4 Hill Climb Special ". Based upon a Low drag and High down force concept developed for the 2009 event and following exhaustive tests in the Monster Sport (Japan) wind tunnel facility, the 2010 race car has undergone extensive aerodynamic changes to adapt better to the further modified road surface which now consists of more smooth tarmac and less gravel than was present in 2009.

Monster Sport has also further developed the 3100cc Twin Turbo Monster Special V6 powerplant, now boasting 910hp and 90.5kg-m of torque in an 1100kg body able to accelerate easily to speeds above 200km/h in a matter of seconds.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as The Race to the Clouds, is an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, a distance of 19.99 km (12.42 miles) over 156 turns, climbing 1,439 meters (4,721 ft) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway at 2,862 meters (9,390 ft) on grades averaging 7% over both gravel and paved sections.

The race is on the FIA International Events Calendar and has featured competition from United States rally sanctioning body SCCA ProRally in 2004 and Rally America in 2005. It has taken place since 1916 and is currently contested by a variety of classes of Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles and Quads. There are often numerous new classes tried and discarded year-to-year.


The first running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was promoted by Spencer Penrose. Penrose had finished widening the narrow carriage road into a much wider "Pikes Peak Highway." He decided to encourage tourists to visit by creating a race to the clouds.



On average there are 150 competitors. The oldest current class is the Open Wheel division which has been run since 1916 and has been won by such names as Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, and Robby Unser (the current class record holder, achieving 10:05.85 min in 1994).



The overall record is held by Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima from Japan who clocked a time of 10:01.408 on July 21, 2007 driving the 1000 hp mid-engined Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special, breaking the previous record (set in 1994 by Rod Millen) by less than three seconds. The winning time in 1916 was 20:55.40, set by Rea Lentz.



In 1989, an award-winning short film about the 1988 event was released by French director Jean-Louis Mourey. The film, titled Climb Dance, captured the efforts of Finnish former World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen, as he won the event in a record-breaking time with his turbocharged Peugeot 405 T16.

terowong air mentah terpanjang di Asia Tenggara dan yang keenam di dunia



Terpanjang di Asia Tenggara

Dalam senario terkini, faktor kepentingan air kepada penduduk dan kekurangan punca sumber air mentah di negeri Selangor pada masa depan telah mendorong kerajaan mengambil keputusan untuk menyegerakan pelaksanaan pembinaan Projek Penyaluran Air Mentah Pahang - Selangor (PPAMPS).

Projek itu melibatkan dua fasa utama iaitu pertama, pembekalan air mentah dari Pahang ke Selangor termasuk terowong bawah tanah antara Karak di Pahang dan Hulu Langat di Selangor, serta kedua, pembinaan loji rawatan air di Hulu Langat.

Projek berimpak tinggi yang bernilai RM3.936 bilion itu dijangka siap pada tahun 2014. Apabila projek itu siap nanti terowong itu akan menjadi terowong air mentah terpanjang di Asia Tenggara dan yang keenam di dunia.

Pelaburan besar negara ke atas projek yang mengambil masa kira-kira empat tahun lagi itu penting kerana air merupakan keperluan penduduk.

Bagi Setiausaha Kerja Persatuan Pengguna Islam Malaysia (PPIM), Datuk Nadzim Johan, ketiadaan sumber air merupakan satu isu yang berat kepada pengguna.

Katanya, projek penyaluran air mentah dari Pahang itu akan memberikan impak yang positif kepada pengguna apabila ia siap kelak.

“Usaha yang dilakukan kerajaan itu sangat bermanfaat memandangkan bekalan air bersih amat penting untuk segenap lapisan masyarakat. Masyarakat Islam misalnya, memerlukannya untuk berwuduk, bersuci dan sebagainya,” ujar beliau.

Tambah Nadzim, pada masa yang sama, masyarakat perlu dididik untuk bertindak sebagai pengguna air yang berhemah.

“Kita perlu menghargai air kerana sebanyak manapun air itu disalirkan, jika ia tidak digunakan dengan sebaik mungkin, ia akan habis juga,” kata beliau.




Punca air

Menurut Pengarah Projek PPAMPS, Datuk Ir. Ismail Mat Noor projek tersebut bertujuan untuk menyalurkan air mentah dari Sungai Semantan di Pahang ke Hulu Langat, Selangor.

Jelas beliau, Sungai Semantan dipilih sebagai sumber untuk menyalurkan air ke Selangor kerana keupayaan sungai tersebut membekalkan air.

“Sungai Semantan merupakan sungai yang berpunca dari tiga sungai yang lain seperti Sungai Telemung, Sungai Kelau dan Sungai Bentong. Namun, untuk persediaan awal jika berlaku sebarang kemungkinan kami juga akan membina sebuah empangan di Kelau,” ujar Ismail.

Jelasnya, empangan di Kelau itu bertujuan untuk menyimpan air mentah untuk dibekalkan ke Selangor.

“Misal kata air di Sungai Semantan mengalami kemarau dan kekurangan air. Air dari empangan itu akan dilepaskan ke dalam terowong tersebut. Itu merupakan persediaan yang dibuat untuk menampung air jika kekurangan air di sungai itu,” ujar beliau.

Selain itu, Sungai Semantan turut dipilih kerana faktor kebersihan dan kualiti airnya yang masih boleh dirawat dengan mudah.

“Boleh dikatakan kebanyakan sungai di Pahang mempunyai kualiti air yang baik termasuklah Sungai Pahang.

Demi untuk menjayakan penyaluran air itu nanti mengikut masa yang ditetapkan, empat komponen utama terdiri daripada terowong penyaluran air, empangan Muka Sauk dan empangan Kelau, saliran paip berkembar dan Stesen Pam Air Semantan.

Terowong air mentah itu berkeupayaan membekalkan air mentah sebanyak 1,890 liter air sehari apabila siap kelak.



Teknologi canggih PPAMPS

Dengan status projek mega beberapa mesin berteknologi tinggi digunakan dalam proses untuk menyiapkan Projek Penyaluran Air Mentah Pahang ke Selangor (PPAMPS).

Antara mesin yang berkhidmat dengan PPAMPS sehingga projek itu selesai ialah beberapa buah Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) dan Conduit.

Setiap mesin atau kaedah yang digunakan itu mempunyai keistimewaannya yang tersendiri.

Pada 29 November yang lalu, TBM3 telah memulakan operasinya untuk mengorek terowong bawah tanah sejauh 11.2 kilometer (km).

Ismail berkata, projek terowong itu sahaja bernilai RM1.3 bilion bakal menyalurkan air mentah dalam lima tahun lagi.

Menurutnya, TBM3 atau juga dikenali sebagai Tiara Midori, melakukan kerja-kerja mengorek bersama dua lagi mesin pengorek iaitu Kamila (TBM1) dan Selpah (TBM2).

“Mesin pengorek Tiara Midori yang panjangnya 205 meter akan mengorek sejauh 11.2 kilometer dari sini (Semantan) dan ia mampu mengorek sejauh 1,000 meter setiap bulan.

“Mesin Tiara Midori akan beroperasi 24 jam menggunakan tenaga kerja sebanyak 20 orang untuk satu-satu syif,” ujarnya.

Tambah beliau, pihaknya turut melakukan beberapa persediaan sebelum kerja mengorek bermula seperti menyelidik jenis batu.

“Jika batu jenis keras kita tidak perlu melakukan forepoling. Forepoling merujuk kepada teknik untuk menahan tanah atau batu dari runtuh di kawasan yang tidak kukuh,” jelasnya.

Berdasarkan kajian awal, katanya, kira-kira 90 peratus dari kawasan yang bakal dikorek ialah kawasan berbatu keras.

Jelas Ismail untuk kawasan berbatu, pihaknya menggunakan mesin yang dikenali sebagai New Austrian Tunneling (NATM) beberapa meter sebelum TBM memulakan tugasnya.

“NATM adalah satu kaedah dimana satu mesin akan menggerudi batu di kawasan tersebut.

“Dalam projek ini, kaedah NATM hanya digunakan di Inlet (air masuk) dan Outlet (air keluar) terowong sahaja,” katanya.

Projek yang dijangka siap pada bulan Jun 2014 itu akan menyalurkan air mentah sebanyak 1,890 juta liter sehari.

Sebanyak empat syarikat terlibat dalam usaha sama itu seperti IJM Corp. Bhd., UEM Builders Bhd. Shimizu Co rporation dan Nishimatsu Construction Co. Ltd.

Projek itu diluluskan oleh Kerajaan Persekutuan bagi memenuhi keperluan bekalan air di Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur dan Putrajaya.
