How to Cool an Overheated Engine

Engine overheating is a symptom of another problem--usually low coolant level caused by a leak, a thermostat that's stuck closed, an inoperative cooling fan or a clogged radiator. The most important thing is to turn off the car before the overheating does any damage.

Instructions

Put on your turn signals and/or flashers to indicate you are pulling off the road.

Turn both the heater setting and the heater blower to high to divert heat from the engine. This may help, but only if the problem is a broken fan or fan belt (it's always worth a try).

Pull over and find a safe place to park on the side of the road.

Turn off the engine.

Open the hood.

Check the coolant level by looking at the coolant reservoir, a plastic tank. (Do not open the radiator cap when the engine is hot. The radiator is under pressure, and hot coolant could seriously burn you.) On some German cars the plastic coolant tank is pressurized--wait for the engine to cool before opening the tank to add coolant. This may take up to 20 minutes.

Use a funnel to add coolant to the reservoir if the level is below the low line. Always wait for the engine to cool down before opening the radiator cap. When everything is full, visit your mechanic right away to find and repair the leak.

If a low coolant level is not the problem, you have a more complicated cooling system problem and should call a tow truck.

If this is the case, wait for the engine to cool down, then drive to a phone or a garage. Check the temperature gauge as you drive to make sure it isn't going into the red. If the gauge starts to rise again, pull over, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool again.

Tips & Warnings

• Regular maintenance reduces the possibility of overheating. Change the coolant every autumn, periodically check the belts and hoses, and bring your car to a mechanic to check for leaks if the coolant level is consistently low.
  
  
• Coolant is a mixture of 1/2 antifreeze and 1/2 water, but in a pinch it's OK to add just one or the other.
  
  
• Never let the needle on your dashboard's temperature gauge go into the red. Don't wait for the next exit if you see the needle approaching the red zone; pull over and turn off the engine before you blow a head gasket.

2012 Nissan GT-R shows-off its launch control

New launch control function helps smooth out and maximize the GT-R's sprint 0 to 100 km/h in 3 seconds flat!

Now, you can watch how the 2012 Nissan GT-R achieves that remarkable feat with the help of its launch control function - called the R-Mode Start Function or the LC4 R35.

It does so in several 'take-offs' in this video.

Nissan tested the GT-R's time on the Sendai Hi-land Race Way in Japan last year and that 3 second sprint time is impressive for a relatively well-priced sport model like the GT-R. By comparison, the next Lamborghini LP 700-4 uses a carbon fiber body and a 6.5 liter V12, with 700 PS (690 bhp / 515 kW) to get that flagship supercar's 0 to 100 km/h sprint in at under 3 seconds (2.9 seconds is the official Lambo time).

The 2012 Nissan GT-R comes with a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 engine featuring an output of 530 hp (395 kW / 537 PS) and 488 lb-ft (661 Nm) of torque.

Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), also known as The Race to the Clouds, is an annual automobile and motorcycle hillclimb to the summit of Pikes Peak in Colorado, a distance of 19.99 km (12.42 miles) over 156 turns, climbing 1,439 meters (4,721 ft) from the start at Mile 7 on Pikes Peak Highway at 2,862 meters (9,390 ft) on grades averaging 7% over both gravel and paved sections.

The race is on the FIA International Events Calendar and has featured competition from United States rally sanctioning body SCCA ProRally in 2004 and Rally America in 2005. It has taken place since 1916 and is currently contested by a variety of classes of Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles and Quads. There are often numerous new classes tried and discarded year-to-year.

The first running of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb was promoted by Spencer Penrose. Penrose had finished widening the narrow carriage road into a much wider "Pikes Peak Highway." He decided to encourage tourists to visit by creating a race to the clouds.

On average there are 150 competitors. The oldest current class is the Open Wheel division which has been run since 1916 and has been won by such names as Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Bobby Unser, and Robby Unser (the current class record holder, achieving 10:05.85 min in 1994).

The overall record is held by Nobuhiro "Monster" Tajima from Japan who clocked a time of 10:01.408 on July 21, 2007 driving the 1000 hp mid-engined Suzuki XL7 Hill Climb Special, breaking the previous record (set in 1994 by Rod Millen) by less than three seconds. The winning time in 1916 was 20:55.40, set by Rea Lentz.

In 1989, an award-winning short film about the 1988 event was released by French director Jean-Louis Mourey. The film, titled Climb Dance, captured the efforts of Finnish former World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen, as he won the event in a record-breaking time with his turbocharged Peugeot 405 T16.

Mini Sprint - Small bore Open Wheel category. Smaller and lighter with no more than 220ci (3.6 L)

engines and no forced induction.

Super Stock Car - Traditional tube-frame stock cars. Must be less than 10 years old.

Pro Trucks - Purpose-built tube-frame off-road pickups and SUV's.

Pikes Peak Open - Cars or trucks that look like a stock vehicle from the outside, but retain little of the original design.

Time Attack 4wd - Production based AWD or 4wd vehicles

Time Attack 2wd - Production based 2wd vehicles.

HPSS (High Performance Showroom Stock) - These are stock performance vehicles with upgraded safety features.

Exhibition Car/Truck- Cars and trucks that don't fit into standard categories. Often these categories feature advances in alternative fuels or technologies.
